I'm not a perfect mom. Never will be, but I don't aspire to be perfect. Just a good mom who has time for her kids.
As a journalist, I've never had a 9-to-5 job. Early days, late nights, weekends...they happen.
To make the most of my precious time with my family, I must find ways to be efficient. At dinner, my time-saving helper is my cell phone. Yes. I've programmed all the take-out numbers to my favorite restaurants so as I leave the office, I can call in dinner. I do it after chatting with my husband and figuring out what we will eat.
My restaurants, in a way, are their own ICE (in case of emergency) group. When Mommy is tired or exceptionally busy, the kids could potentially go without eating. It's not life threatening, but does create panic. Who can help? A restaurant!
Calling in takeout is not a regular thing. I'd be broke! But when nights are busy or I'm particularly exhausted, it helps. No sitting as many as 20 minutes to wait for an order. Just pick up and go. It also means I don't have to make an extra trip after getting home to complain about not wanting/having time to make dinner. That only wastes gas and time. I KNOW when I leave for the day when take out is a MUST.
Tip No. 2: Keep take-out menus in a folder at home by the phone and/or some in your car's glove box. Before pulling out of your office's parking lot, peruse the menus so you know what everyone wants. Update your menus from time to time because prices and offerings do change. Side note: To save money & calories, split your meals. Instead of four pasta dishes where left overs are sure to remain, why not pick two and then add a bagged salad at home?
Wishing you more time with your families. Cheers!
